Add New Column using Form Designer

The Form Designer now enables the creation of new list and library columns directly from the design screen, without having to go back to the original source in SharePoint. This speeds up the workflow of creating or modifying lists and libraries.

Instructions

Operation is very straightforward. With your form open in the Form Designer tool, there is now a New column link in the right navigation.

When you click the link, the Add new column dialog will open to the right of the window.

To select the column type, click the small down arrow on the right side of the Type field. A pop-up menu will open, displaying all the standard SharePoint list column types, plus some Ultimate Forms-specific types such as Associated items and Associated items summary.

As with creating columns with the standard SharePoint method, the available fields for column settings will vary with the column type. For instance, if you select a Choice column, you will see places to enter the column’s name, the choices, a description, etc. You can also specify if the field is required, add a default value, and choose between having the column choices show in the form as radio buttons or a drop-down list.

When you have completed your settings, click Save to close the dialog and save your work.

You new column will now be displayed in the left-navigation list of available fields. Click and drag it onto the form to use it.

Two Important Notes:

By default, columns created in Form Designer will not be included in the active view of the list or library. This means that you will need to edit the view settings. Click the View link in the menu bar and select Edit this view from the drop-down menu.

You can now add your column(s) to the view and set the display order. Scroll to the bottom of the window and click Okay to save your changes.

Your column will now be visible in the view.

Additionally, you cannot make column settings changes within Form Designer once the column is created. If you want to make changes to the column’s settings, you must do that via the standard SharePoint method.
