The Counter web parts allows you to display automatically calculated counters on your web part pages. The web part is configured for a specific list and contains one or more individual counters.

Each counter is configured for a specific column in the lists, although multiple counters can use the same column. It then queries the list (subject to optional conditions and filters) and the applies the selected operation on the values:

  • Count - displays how many items there are that satisfy the condition[s]. For example, number of open tasks
  • Sum - adds up all the values from the queried items and displays the result. For example, total sales per year.
  • Average - calculates the average number. For example, the average handling time for a support ticket
  • Minimum/maximum - displays the value, such as the highest individual sales quote per year.

For each counter you can provide filters and conditions. You can optionally filter by view and then also add specific conditions. Make sure to index the columns used in conditions if your list contains over 5,000 items to prevent throttling.

You can configure your counter to display trends. When this option is used, a small triangle is displayed next to the value to indicate whether it changed up or down compared to the previous value. You can choose to display increase or decrease as a positive change (indicated by a green triangle). If you are using trends, you can specify conditions for the previous value (such as previous year).

You can configure your counter to display its value as percentage. For that you can enter conditions for a "total" value. The specific value is then divided by the total value to display percentage. For example, if the specific value is amount of sales this year in Europe, then the total value could be the amount of sales in the whole world. The counter then displays the percentage of sales originating in Europe.

You can provide a label for the counter. The label is displayed below the value and can contain any text. You can provide translations for your label for multiple languages. The actual displayed language will depend on the main language of the current page visitor.

Each counter can optionally be configured as a link. Provide a link to the list view with the underlying data for the counter. This allows users to dive deeper and investigate what is going on. Links can open in the same or new tab.
